From mathematics in Norway to animation in Denmark

2010 is a special SIGGRAPH-year for one particular CG Artist student. Ole Christian Gulbrandsen has managed to get his “Controlling the dark side of toon shading” published as a poster in connection to SIGGRAPH 2010.
Furthermore, Ole will be travelling to Los Angeles to participate in SIGGRAPH 2010.
The poster is based on the work that went before the actual animation work on the bachelor short film which Ole and his three fellow students from The Animation Workshop are working hard to finish. At the moment, the short film bears the title “Project X”.

A good poster expresses a novel idea in a simple, concise way. Posters are particularly well-suited for ideas that are still "under construction" as well as for student work. Work submitted as a poster does not need to be complete, but it should have enough substance to be evaluated. Ole’s poster was selected among a lot of other poster by a jury, who judged the works on the criteria: concept, novelty, interest, and quality.

Acknowledgement of the pre-process
Ole especially regards the selection poster at SIGGRAPH 2010 as an acknowledgement of the hard work that is the foundation for any production:

“I am of course very excited that it is being published. The committee consists of highly qualified people and it is cool to get acknowledged for all the work that goes before the actual animation process”, says Ole.

Creative and technical animation
Ole Christian Gulbrandsen from Norway happened to come across the educations that The Animation Workshop offers. Ole sent his application, got accepted and began his studies at the CG Artist line in 2007. He found that here is room for both the creative and the technical sides of animation.

“The Animation Workshop has an awesome environment. It is very creative, but at the same time I really feel that I am able to apply a lot from my educational background. It is really cool; I feel like I have found something I really want to work with!”, says Ole.

A background in mathematics
Before arriving in Viborg, Ole studied mathematics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and he is now utilizing this background in some of the work that he and three fellow students are doing to finish up their bachelor film projects. Together, they are producing an animated film in 3D, but with the goal of making it look like it is done in 2D – something which requires elaborate technical skills.

The future – who knows?
Ole is now finishing the bachelor short film and after the summer holidays, Ole is going to intern in Research and Development at Trixter Animation Studio in Germany. When asked what his dream job is, Ole answers:

“Well, I cannot put one particular title on it. I love the energy that is present when the technically oriented and the creatively oriented people work together on a project. I will definitely work with in animation, somehow”.
