The Animation Workshop in Taiwan
Animation HUB employee, Claus Toksvig, recently visited Next Media in Taiwan in relation to the Animation Hub project, Animated News.
Next Media is one of Asia’s biggest news agencies. They even have their own production of animation used for news stories. There are about 240 employees in the animation department which makes it possible to do animation around the clock.
Next Media uses Motion Capture in the production of animated news. Motion Capture is a technique where a person puts on a special made suit with a lot of sensors that register movements. By using this special suit it is possible to reproduce the news event. Using Motion Capture, it takes three hours to make a one minute news feature.
Animated News is a project that focuses on using animation in correlation with news.
The advantage of animated news is that there is no need for photos or recordings from the news event.
The project Animated News in Denmark was initiated as a response to changes in the media landscape. For instance, sales of newspapers have drastically declined over the past few years. Researchers predict that the newspaper as a printed media is on return. More and more people read the newspapers online instead of buying them.
Maybe Animated News could be the next step for the Danish world of news coverage?
Claus Toksvig: “The visit at Next Media should not necessarily be viewed as a recipe on how we should do Animated News in Denmark. The visit is more an inspirational trip to see what possibilities are available. The phenomenon is quite new and there is a lot of room for experimenting and trying out animation techniques and pipelines”.
The Animation Hub is a part of The Animation Workshop. The department focuses on functional animation. This type of animation is used by companies, in science and within medical science etc. Common for all the companies in cooperation with the Animation Hub is that they traditionally do not deal with animation.
The Animation Hub has four main fields:
Science animation: The goal is to strengthen knowledge sharing between knowledge centers and companies by using animation.
Medico animation: The goal is to develop animation tools for communication in the field of medical science.
Animated News: The goal is to create a determined effort within the growing market for digital media and make both animation and animators a part of it.
Animated User Interfaces: The goal is to create focus on animated user interfaces.
